However, in Thoroughbred horse racing, a mare is defined as a female horse more than four years old;[citation needed] in harness racing a mare is a female horse more than three years old. The word can also be used for other female equine animals, particularly mules and zebras, though a female donkey is usually called a "jenny." A broodmare is a mare used for breeding. A horse's female parent is known as its dam.

An adult male horse is called a stallion, or, if castrated, a gelding. Occasionally the term "horse" is used in a restrictive sense to designate only a male horse.

for more info about this please go to
http://ochol.com/2011/01/30/clean-a-mares-female-parts/

Clean a Mare's Female Parts

Clean a Mare's Female Parts

How to clean a Mare's Female Parts?
Tie your mare either in a wash rack, or another area that your stable owner will not be mad at you for washing your horse. A calm horse does not always need to be tied, but be sure that the horse cannot just walk off.

Start by bathing the mare's body.

Lift her tail to wash her vulva, and make sure that you clean just below her vulva as well. Spray it with the hose to get it wet. If the mare pulls her tail down, the hose may be a little too strong, or she is just not used to it and is uncomfortable. Try to put the hose on your hand, and if it stings, even just a little, turn it down, and then try again.

Use the sponge to clean her vulva. You should NOT go into any area, just get exterior clean.

Gently rinse the area off with the hose and be sure there is no soap left over as this can cause itching. Again if she pulls her tail down try to create less pressure in the hose.

Soak the sponge with soap and water then lightly begin cleaning the mares udders. If she resists, try using gloves to clean with your hands as the mare may not be comfortable with the sponge on her udders and teats.

Very carefully rinse off the teat area and your mare will now be comfortable and grateful to you for doing that.

for more info about this??? please go to
http://ochol.com/2011/01/30/clean-a-mares-female-parts/
